Symbols Making Sense
A complete reading scheme
Symbols Making Sense is a reading scheme designed specifically for pupils who require the support of symbols when reading.
The Symbols Making Sense reading scheme comprises more than 40 books, ranging from introductory book A (basic nouns in common use) to more complex sentences, social stories and non-fiction – all supported by symbols. Books aim to meet the needs of a wide range of ages and abilities and may also be helpful for some pupils who have English as a second language.
A comprehensive teaching guide explains how to use each of the books and aims to support anyone in a 'teaching' role to understand the basic principles of language development and subsequent reading skills.
The use of symbols to support text will not be a new experience for those involved in special education, but a complete reading scheme that includes fiction and non-fiction is currently unique. The scheme uses Widgit symbols whose use development and use has spanned many years.
It may not be necessary to work through the entire scheme; some teachers may prefer to select an particular set of books for an individual. The main focus should always be enjoyment and not simply another task.
All books are printed on high-quality paper with wipe-cleanable covers and are spiral bound for convenience when photocopying.

Introductory Books
A set of 10 books that introduce everyday concepts commencing with a single noun per page within Book A and B. Book B introduces the four main characters that are included throughout the scheme, and Book C uses and for the first time, thus enabling the reader to make progress at an early stage. The inclusion of characters adds interest and enjoyment to the books and is helpful when teaching gender and multi-cultural aspects of society.
The overall aim of these all important books is to create an interest in reading, reinforce the use of left to right orientation and build pupil confidence as the learn new symbols. As with all Symbols Making Sense books they may also be used to aid those pupils who have English as a second language. Clear and uncluttered illustrations aid understanding and the pre-set tasks supplied in the Teaching Guide (80 in all) provide teachers with a tool for assessing comprehension, and save valuable planning/preparation time.

Finding Out Books
A set of six books dedicated to the use of question words – what, where, who, which, why and when. These books may be read immediately following the Introductory Books, or independently as a support to any curriculum area. They include aspects of safety, seasons and travel. Helpful teaching notes and pre-set comprehension tasks are included within each book.

Levels 1-4 Stories
Level 1 stories use simple plots about domestic pets and include the previously introduced characters. Each story links to the next book with opportunities to reinforce previously learnt vocabulary. Beautifully illustrated, with teaching notes and tasks, a useful aid to any parent or classroom practitioner aiming to enhance literacy skills.
Level 2 stories continue to use simple plots with books again being linked to the next book in order to encourage pupil's interest in gaining a new book. As with all story books any new vocabulary is highlighted at the back of each book and is accompanied by associated comprehension tasks. As pupils complete Level 1 and 2 stories there is an opportunity for teachers to assess progress before moving on to Level 3.
Level 3 stories introduce some additional characters for added interest, and include the use dialogue for the first time. Humour is also used within level 3 and many of the stories link to everyday situations such as visiting the dentist, moving house and starting school (social stories). These books are particularly helpful for those pupils who find sudden change difficult.
Level 4 stories again focus on social stories with an emphasis on family relationships, and the arrival of a new baby in the final book. All story books have a cross curricula theme drawing in opportunities for role play and creative skills within the tasks. All tasks in all books may be photo copied, thus saving teachers hours of preparation time. By the end of Level 4 story books it is hoped that some pupils will be gaining some word recognition.
